Remembering Pattabhi Jois

May 22nd, 2009

Pattabhi Jois, one of the four modern gurus of yoga and an important influence on our practice at The Yoga Space, has died at age 93. Jois had studied with Krishnamacharya, who rediscovered and popularized the ancient art of yoga in India. Jois developed Ashtanga yoga which focuses on strength, flexibility and stamina. Jois would say, “Ashtanga yoga is 99 percent practice, one percent theory.” An excellent video, Ashtanga New York: A Yoga Documentary (2003), was filmed during his visit to America during the crisis of 9/11. Well-known practitioners of ashtanga in the West include Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow. Here is a news article link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8058905.stm

Several years ago, Jenne and I planned able to attend one of his workshops but sadly he cancelled due to ill health.

“If we practice the science of yoga, which is useful to the entire human community and which yields happiness both here and hereafter – if we practice it without fail, we will then attain physical, mental, and spiritual happiness, and our minds will flood towards the Self.”

Sri K. Pattabhi Jois
